The male axis averages about 35 inches tall at the shoulder, with a total length of 67 inches. Non-typical 7th and 8th+ points near the bases are not uncommon. Its antlers, which it sheds annually, are usually three-pronged (6 points total), curved and may extend to 2.5 feet. The name, chital (axis), comes from the Bengali word chitral, which means "spotted". The axis deer originally and commonly inhabits wooded regions of Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Pakistan. ![]()
